When manufacturing medicines from human blood or plasma, certain measures are applied to prevent the transmission of infections to patients. This includes careful selection of blood and plasma donors and examination of each donated blood and pooled plasma for signs of virus/infection to rule out the risk of transmission of infection. Manufacturers of these products also include steps in the processing of blood and plasma that can inactivate or remove viruses. Despite these measures, when medicinal products derived from human blood or plasma are administered, the possibility of transmission of infectious agents cannot be completely excluded. This also applies to unknown or emerging viruses and other types of infections.
There have been no reports of transmission of viral infections using albumin produced according to established procedures according to the specifications of the European Pharmacopoeia. It is recommended that each time Grifols Human Albumin 20% is administered to a patient, the name and batch number of the product should be recorded in order to maintain a record of all batches that have been used.
